Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed to September 17th

Despite being complete and playable, CD Projekt RED needs more time for "playtesting, fixing and polishing."

Tis the season of video game delays, the latest being CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077. The developer has announced a delay from its original release date of April 16th to September 17th. Much like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Marvel’s Avengers, the reasoning behind the delay is simple – additional polish is required.

In an official statement on Twitter, co-founder Marcin Iwinski and head of studio Adam Badowski said, “We are currently at the stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done. Night City is massive – full of stories, content and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing.”

The developer wants Cyberpunk 2077 to be its “crowning achievement for this generation” and feels that postponing the launch will offer enough time to “make the game perfect”. Regular updates will be offered en route to the new date. As far as sudden delays go though, this is probably the least unexpected.

After all, CD Projekt RED has been talking about the project’s complexity for the past year or so. Even after announcing a release date back at E3 2019, it revealed that it was “pushing it to the wall” to meet deadlines. Though fans will have to wait a bit longer to experience the epic RPG, this just means they’ll have a (hopefully) more polished title when it does release.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. However, there is a chance that it could release for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 later.
