For all the rumours, and statements from companies like Sony about next-gen hardware, it’s pretty incredible to see the Xbox One and PS4 holding up this long after their launch. Both consoles released at a time when they were considered “under-powered” next to top of the line PC GPUs. Since then, however, we’ve been seeing experiences like Forza Horizon 4, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and God of War made possible on the current generation of consoles.

So despite some doubt about CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 releasing on next generation hardware, it’s indeed slated for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. GamingBolt had a chance to speak to level designer Miles Tost, and asked about the challenges faced during development.

Was there any truth to statements about Cyberpunk 2077 not being able to run on current gen consoles? Tost simply noted, “Recently released titles have shown us that there’s still a lot of juice left in the current generation and I continue to be amazed by what’s being done.”

Would current gen consoles be able to pull off the NPC count and fidelity that was showcased in the demo? “Looking at the games released at the beginning of this generation and comparing them to some of the absolutely amazing looking recent titles, we can see quite an astonishing difference,” Tost said to GamingBolt. “Devs are a resourceful bunch — we figure out new and better ways of using and optimizing tools we work with all the time.”

It also doesn’t hurt that optimization was a goal for Cyberpunk 2077 from the initial stages of development. CD Projekt RED even has a team of programmers dedicated to working on optimization. Now the real question is if the game will be releasing in 2019 as rumours have stated. It’s going to be a long wait regardless. Stay tuned for our full interview with Tost.
