Cyberpunk 2077 Developer Says “It’s a Bad Idea to Do Microtransactions After You Release a Game”

"Why would we do something like that and lose the goodwill of our customers?" says CDPR's John Mamais.

While publishers in the industry often choose to include microtransactions in their games, there are some who refuse to do so- such as CD Projekt RED, who have made it abundantly clear that their upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 also won’t have any in-game purchases. But does that mean that the game won’t have microtransactions at launch, but that these will be added later, especially considering the fact that a multiplayer mode will be added to the game post-launch?

Certain publishers – Activision in particular – choose to launch their games without microtrasactions, but add them in post-launch after reviews have gone live. It’s a shady practice, to say the least, but those looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 need not worry. Recently, while speaking with GameSpot, John Mamais – who is the head of CD Projekt RED’s Krakow office – said that the company thinks it’s a bad idea to include microtransactions in its games after release, and wouldn’t risk losing the goodwill of its fans even if it is profitable for them.

“I think it’s a bad idea to do microtransactions after you release a game,” he said. “It seems like it’s very profitable, though. It’s probably a hard decision for the guy that runs the business to decide if we should do it or not. But if everyone hates it, why would we do something like that and lose the goodwill of our customers?”

Cyberpunk 2077 is out for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on April 16, 2020. Other than its multiplayer mode, there will be plenty of other post-launch support for the game as well. Read more on that through here.
