Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Not Concerned About Launching In Competitive Release Window

"You're never launching in a time that's exclusive to you," says CDPR's Michal Nowakowski.

While many upcoming releases have been hit by delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, CD Projekt RED remain confident that they’ll be able to get Cyberpunk 2077 out by September, even though some parts of development have been impacted to some degree. September, however, has typically been a month that sees many big games coming out, so what are the developer’s thoughts on launching in such a competitive window?

Speaking in a recent Q&A with investors (via GamesIndustry), CD Projekt’s senior vice president of business development Michal Nowakowski said that the developer is not concerned about the competition, and that that was something they had always been aware of. As such, they don’t plan on pushing the game’s release back to make sure it comes out in a less crowded window.

“We’re definitely not planning to move our dates because someone else is going to land in the window,” said Norakowski. “You’re never launching in a time that’s exclusive to you. There’s no such thing. September has always been a competitive period of time and we’ve always been aware of that. If it becomes a tad bit more competitive, that’s fine. We believe we’re going to be launching with a title that’s going to be a must-have title.”

Right now, there’s not too much that has been announced for September- other than Cyberpunk 2077 itself, the only major release planned for the month is Marvel’s Avengers. September has, however, been a crowded month over the years, so there’s every chance that announcements for future releases will be made going forward- though that will likely depend on how the pandemic situation develops.

Cyberpunk 2077, meanwhile, is due out on September 17 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, while full-blown next-gen versions will follow later. The game has already been reviewed and rated by most rating boards around the world. We can also expect to hear about CDPR’s post-launch plans for the game some time before launch.
