God of War Ragnarok

NOTE: There are spoilers ahead for God of War Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok may have been the last game in the series’ Norse saga, but whatever it is that the future holds for the franchise, it may not be as clean of a break from its past narrative threads as the jump from Greek to Norse mythology was. That’s as per recent comments reportedly made by actor Ben Prendergast, who portrayed Tyr, the God of War of the Norse Realms, in the 2021 action-adventure title.

As reported by Shark Games, Prendergast said during a recent PAX East panel that God of War Ragnarok “isn’t the last you’ve seen” of Tyr, his character. He refused to elaborate on his statement, allegedly also joking about having signed NDAs with Sony, though the implication very much seems to be that Tyr might return in some form at some point in the future.

What form that takes remains to be seen. Tyr obviously had a pivotal role in God of War Ragnarok, and though the game’s big twist towards the end threw all of that into question, he did make an appearance in his true form in God of War Ragnarok’s post-game content, and is still alive and well at this point in the series’ story.

Whether this means he will appear in future games as well remains to be seen- though one can probably safely rule out expansions for Ragnarok, given director Eric Williams’ past comments. Meanwhile, a God of War TV series has also been officially greenlit by Amazon, and there is a chance that Prendergast could be referring to his character showing up in the adaptation.
