Mortal Kombat 1’s newest trailer revealed that its roster will also include Rain and Smoke returning as main playable characters, with the likes of Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost returning as Kameo fighters. Now, an update to the game’s official website has also revealed new story details on Rain and Smoke in particular, and where you’ll find them as the game’s story kicks off.

As per the website, Rain is a student of Outworld’s Imperial Academy of Sorcery, where has has “amazes his peers with his singular aptitude for water magic.” Through his training, he has honed this craft and turned it into a “fierce” weapon, and now intends to use it to “learn the realms’ darkest and most powerful sorcer.”

Smoke, meanwhile, is going to present a rather different rendition in this rebooted universe. When he was a child, his parents were killed by the Lin Kuei after they unknowingly encroached into the clan’s territory, leaving him orphaned. Ashamed by his warriors’ actions though, the Grandmaster of the Lin Kiue took him in and raised him alongside his sons, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Now a trained warrior, Smoke has mastered “practical magic” and stands in defense of Earthrealm with the rest of the realm.

Previously, the website also revealed story details on the likes of Scoprion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Raiden, Kitana, Mileena, Kenshi, and Johnny Cage. Read more on that through here.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
