Roughly three years after the launch of the PS4, Sony released a more powerful variant of the console with the PS4 Pro, and it seems the company has similar plans for the PS5, though on a slightly different timeline.

Previously, reports have claimed that Sony is working on a new PS5 model with a detachable disc drive, which is expected to launch by September this year and will eventually replace the two existing PS5 models. In addition to that, as per a new Insider Gaming report, the company is also said to be working on a PS5 Pro.

While details on what the new model will entail, speculation would suggest that the console will feature improved technical and visual capabilities, with a recently-spotted Sony patent having suggested that the company is looking into enhanced ray tracing performance.

As per the Insider Gaming report, the PS5 Pro is targeting a late 2024 launch, which will be four years on from the console’s original launch in November 2020. Allegedly, the PlayStation 6 is not expected to release until at least 2028.

Previous reports have claimed that development kits of the PS5 Pro and a similar mid-generation Xbox Series hardware upgrade are already in the hands of many developers. Read more on that through here.
