The Elder Scrolls 6 Could be the Last Title in the Series Directed by Todd Howard

"If I do the math, I'm not getting any younger. How long do people play Elder Scrolls? That may be the last one I do. I don't know."

Bethesda Game Studios recently showcased tons of new information and gameplay for Starfield, even confirming a 30 FPS lock on Xbox consoles. While the studio plans for its release in September, it’s also plugging away on The Elder Scrolls 6, the next big title in the fantasy RPG series.

While Todd Howard is also directing that, it may be his last stint on the series in that role. Speaking to IGN, he discussed the gap between Bethesda releases and giving them time, citing other series like Grand Theft Auto as examples of long gaps not being detrimental.

“I think Half-Life 3 will do fine, right? So even though in the moment, how do I bring that closer to reality today, because I want to play it. Those gaps, these are still evergreen franchises that I think when they come, it’s about just doing it right.”

Of course, Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 will be supported post-launch, and Howard admits he isn’t getting “any younger.” “So our ability, as we talked about, to support Starfield… Whereas maybe in the old days, you would put it out, and then you’d go on to a sequel, now we can support that game for a much longer period, which is what our plan is.

“And then as we look to an Elder Scrolls 6, that is one where… I probably shouldn’t say this. But if I do the math, I’m not getting any younger. How long do people play Elder Scrolls? That may be the last one I do. I don’t know.”

Time will tell, but Howard could take producer or designer roles on the project. The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a ways off, and he even confirmed Fallout 5 as releasing afterwards, so the studio has its future cut out for it.

As for Starfield, it launches on September 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PC, while also coming to Game Pass on day one. Premium Edition owners can play five days early and gain access to Shattered Space, its first expansion, when it launches later.
